Climate change is ‘biggest threat to global health’

12 July 2009

A film made by Ember Regis warns that climate change is the biggest global health threat of the 21st Century.

Commissioned by University College London, the film highlights the findings of a major report on managing the health effects of global warming, launched jointly by UCL and The Lancet.

Lead author Professor Anthony Costello says that failure to act on climate change will result in an intergenerational injustice, with our children and grandchildren scorning our generation for ignoring the climate change threat — with similar moral outrage to how we today look back on those who brought in and did nothing to stop slavery.

Professor Costello says: “The big message of this report is that climate change is a health issue affecting billions of people, not just an environmental issue about polar bears and deforestation.” He adds: “The impacts will be felt not just in the UK, but all around the world — and not just in some distant future but in our lifetimes and those of our children.”

Film showcases revolutionary new crop sprayer

12 July 2009

Ember Regis has been in Italy filming a revolutionary new crop sprayer which reduces the spread of pesticide and prevents contamination of the environment.

We were invited to film the ISAFRUIT crop assisted sprayer application (CASA) by one of the project partners, Warwick HRI.

The sprayer combines the latest technology in crop canopy, crop health and environmental condition sensing. In response to these combined inputs it can ensure that only the required amount of pesticide is applied to apple trees.

The sprayer is currently on a tour of 7 European countries, allowing growers to glimpse the future of sprayer technology and is pictured here in San Michele all’Adige, Trentino, Italy.

ISAFRUIT (an EU integrated Research Project under FP6) is an integrated research project with more than 300 scientists from 60 research and development institutions and SMEs, in 16 countries across Europe, the USA and New Zealand, working together towards a common goal. The objective is to increase the consumption of fruit throughout Europe for the benefit of human health, with particular emphasis on addressing bottlenecks such as consumer preferences, fruit availability and quality, and environmentally-friendly production.

18 January 2009

Ember Regis is pleased to announce a new joint venture with The Independent newspaper and the London School of Economics.

Together we’re making a series of films exploring ideas that will shape thinking in the 21st century. The films will first be showcased on Independent.co.uk and then be more widely distributed via YouTube and iTunes.

The Big Ideas series begins with an exploration of the legal issues surrounding assisted dying by Professor Emily Jackson, a leading law professor (pictured). This will be followed by a film on public sector reform featuring social policy expert Professor Julian Le Grand.

Dr Jon Adams from LSE, who is one of the producers, said: “In these films some of LSE’s leading thinkers present novel and bold solutions to some of the problems facing British society today. It is enormously exciting to bring the work of our academics to wider audiences. Online distribution means we are a click away from millions of internet users across the world.”
